When it comes to the manufacture of some of the world’s best gaming peripherals, I believe Logitech requires no introduction. This company’s catalog is so wide that it encompasses from the most basic of office mice, which are worth 4 or 5 dollars, up to the gaming peripherals of the highest quality (and price). And, as luck would have it, today we’ve come to talk to you about the latter category. Specifically, we’re here to elaborate on the marvel that is the Logitech G502 Proteus Core. Keep in mind that we’re not referring to your run-of-the-mill ordinary model; this mouse was pitched to the public as the successor of the famous G9 and G9X, which are some of the flagship peripherals designed, produced, and sold by this company.
The Logitech G502 Proteus Core comes equipped with the proprietary Delta Zero sensor technology, which allows it to provide one of the most precise tracking performances in the market. The sensor itself provides an ample range of sensitivity: from a meager 200, up to a whopping 12000 CPI of sensitivity and, according to the manufacturer, the mouse is capable of moving up to 300 inches per second, without so much as skipping a single pixel along the way. Granted, we’re pretty sure that no one would ever operate the mouse at such speeds, but the numbers are impressive nonetheless.
We actually have a lot to say about this mouse. But before we get started on our Logitech G502 Proteus review, let’s talk about the aspects that make a gaming mouse great, as well as what to look for if you’re in the market for a brand new clicker.
First and foremost, a mouse is only as good as its user. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise; after all, despite the many features a gaming peripheral may offer, it won’t be able to help someone that can’t even tell the front part of the mouse from the back. That being said, a gaming mouse is supposed to provide certain amenities to the player, most of which are designed to improve upon the player’s skills, and give them an edge over their rivals. Things like additional buttons, powerful sensor technology, a properly ergonomic form factor, and design aesthetics to make the player look cool while owning the competition are some of the most common features offered by these products.
As the successor to one of Logitech’s most famous series of gaming mice, the G502 is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Equipped with the best sensor technology that this company has to offer, the idea behind the Proteus’ design was to provide the absolute most precise tracking experience possible, without any type of smoothing, filtering, or mouse acceleration. This results in a mouse which provides premium performance with high fidelity, without any kind of post-processing effects that may interfere with the user’s hand inputs. Alongside the powerful sensor, this mouse also counts with a generous amount of buttons, a weight tuning system, and several smart design choices to make it comfortable to use, even through the longest gaming sessions.
But enough previews; let’s get down and personal with the G502 and see what this bad boy really has to offer.
The Logitech G502 Proteus comes packaged in a sturdy yet small cardboard box with a design in shades of black and blue. We have to admit that, when we first saw this mouse in pictures upon its release, we thought that it was actually quite big. Imagine our surprise when we actually laid eyes upon this mouse’s small container. Like with most gaming mice containers, the box of the G502 contains myriad information about the titular mouse on its many faces. On the front of the box, we are greeted by a big image of the G502, pictured alongside one its main features; the weight adjustment system. This same face functions as a lid that, when opened up, reveals the safely kept within its plastic inner container. Behind the lid, we are also treated with several paragraphs of information, this time going into detail on the Delta Zero sensor technology installed within this mouse, and which we’ll explain further down the line. On the back of the box, we find several small tidbits of information about the G502’s parts, while the technical information and specifications are neatly displayed on both sides of the box.
As with most gaming mice, upon opening the box of the Proteus, we are presented with its respective accessories and removable parts. Among said items, there is the instruction booklet, a safety pamphlet, and a hexagonal plastic box that contains 5 3.6 gram weights which can be used to modify both the weight and center of mass of the mouse.
After finishing up our examination of the stuff included with the G502, we’re free to take a look at the mouse itself. The very first thing that caught our attention upon taking the mouse out of its plastic mold was its bold design, ergonomically designed for right-handed users. Besides being a bit more extravagant than what we’re used to in most gaming mice, I have to admit that, after holding it in my hand for the first time, the G502 quickly adapted to my shape and type of grip (claw) after a few seconds. Despite testing out different types of mice fairly frequently, I didn’t have any type of issue with the Proteus’ form factor. If anything, the fact that it fits so neatly into our hands is a testament to Logitech’s investment in creating ergonomic and comfortable peripherals.
On the left side of the mouse, just around the thumb rest, there are 3 buttons. Meanwhile on top of the mouse, we can find the 3 usual clickers (left, middle, and right mouse buttons). However, on the left side of the left mouse button, there are also 2 other buttons which are mapped by default to increase and decrease CPI. The scroll wheel itself can be moved not only vertically, but also horizontally to both sides, which performs different functions depending on the user’s configuration. Last, but not least, behind the scroll wheel there are 2 other buttons: one for toggling the infinite scroll feature of the mouse which frees the scroll wheel and allows the user to scroll through long documents at high speeds, and the other which is used to scroll between user profiles. All of these clickers add up to a grand total of 11 buttons, all of which can be freely customized to the user’s requirements with the use of Logitech’s gaming software.
Regarding the sensor: we mentioned above that this mouse was equipped with the proprietary Delta Zero sensor technology, exclusive only to some products manufactured by Logitech. This technology was created to complement the mouse’s sensor and provide a precise and stable tracking experience even at high speeds, with no hint of mouse acceleration, smoothing, or any other type of filtering that may cause input delay. In short, the G502 is as precise as a mouse can be. Furthermore, the fact that the Proteus has a laser sensor allows it to track on virtually any surface, including reflective or transparent materials such as glass tables or desks with polished wood surfaces. The sensor can be adjusted from sensitivities as low as 200 CPI up to a maximum of 12000 CPI.
The vast amount of buttons, coupled with the wide range of sensitivity available to the user, would allow them to excel in most gaming genres: from the slower MOBAs and strategy games to the high-adrenaline gameplay of FPS and competitive RTS matches.
One important thing worth mentioning about this peripheral is that, similar to other gaming mice, the user must install Logitech’s gaming software in order to squeeze out the Proteus’ full potential. This program allows you to customize everything about the performance of the Proteus: from the CPI levels, button assignments, and user profiles, to the lighting options, the creation and assignment of macros, and surface calibration settings.
If we would judge the performance of the G502 based on the specifications listed on Logitech’s website alone, then we wouldn’t be able to catalog it as a good gaming mouse, and much less have a whole lot to say about it. However, after several days of rigorous testing and gaming, we are pleased to say the Proteus has left us thoroughly impressed. For starters, its laser sensor allows it to undergo surface calibration procedures to provide better performance on all types of materials. Furthermore, its weight adjustment capabilities, coupled with the plethora of programmable buttons available to the user make it a real good investment for those on the hunt for a great gaming peripheral to complement their skills. The appealing aesthetic design, comfortable form factor, and very low price tag are merely the cherries on the top of this awesome cake.
After all is said and done, we would heartily recommend this mouse to anyone who is looking to complete their gaming setup, or simply looking to upgrade from a faulty or inferior gaming peripheral.
