How to choose the best Ryzen gaming laptops

Before you buy, we should mention a few key specs that will tell you what you should keep an eye out for when shopping for a gaming laptop.

The most important thing is the graphics card. The GPU is almost solely responsible for the gaming performance. Getting the best one you can afford is a big deal. Even the most wallet-friendly Ryzen laptops we’ll talk about have at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, or an AMD equivalent, which means they’re pretty capable when it comes to 1080p gaming.

Next up, you should consider the CPU. The CPU will be responsible for both gaming performance (although not nearly as much as the GPU), and even more importantly, everything else you might do on your laptop. Nowadays, you should aim for at least a four-core CPU. But six, or even better, eight cores will get you a notable performance boost.

Then, you should consider the RAM memory. 8GB is the absolute minimum, but if you want to multitask, we would recommend going for at least 16GB of RAM. Of course, this is something you can upgrade down the line.

The storage is also most often upgradeable, but modern games are pretty large so you’ll want at least 1TB of storage to make the most of it. Stay clear of conventional hard drives, try to get an SSD instead.

Oh, and last but not least, consider the display – 1080p is good, but you want a fast refresh rate (120Hz or faster).

The ROG Zephyrus G14 by ASUS is an incredible piece of machinery. It’s built like a tank, and it has excellent gaming performance in pretty much any game.

The Ryzen 9 4900HS comes with eight cores and can boost up to 4.3GHz, which is impressive, and you also have a 6GB Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU to take care of your gaming needs. This is a great combo, and you’ll be able to enjoy smooth gameplay on the 120Hz Full HD display.

Multitasking is taken care of thanks to 16GB of RAM, and the ROG Zephyrus comes with a large 1TB SSD. Overall, the laptop checks a lot of boxes, but the 14” display might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If, however, you’re looking to get a compact gaming laptop that’s an absolute powerhouse, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better. Of course, you can also configure it with more RAM and a larger SSD, but that’s not really needed.

Lenovo’s Legion 5 is a great budget pick for one of the best Ryzen gaming laptops. It checks all the boxes for 1080p gaming, and it costs less than most of the competition.

At the core is AMD’s octa-core Ryzen 7 4800H CPU, as well as an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card. It might not be the most powerful combination out there, but it’s absolutely respectable for 1080p gaming.

You do get 16GB of RAM, which should have you covered for multitasking, as well as a 512GB SSD. You might need more storage, but you can add a hard drive down the line. To wrap things up, the 144Hz Full HD display is really good, and a pleasure to game on!

  • GPU: AMD RX 5600M
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Display: 15.6” Full HD 144Hz

Dell’s G5 is their budget option when it comes to the best Ryzen gaming laptops, but you shouldn’t underestimate it when it comes to gaming.

The eight-core Ryzen 7 4800H is paired with an AMD RX 5600M graphics card with 6GB of VRAM, which is a pretty good combo for 1080p gaming. You do get a 1080p 144Hz display, and you’ll easily get those framerates with competitive titles.

Dell also thought of multitasking, which is why you have 16GB of RAM, but we would’ve liked to see more than a 512GB SSD. To add to this, the G5 SE is a thick, chunky laptop that does come with a hefty weight, so it’s not really the most portable option out there. Still, a great pick if you don’t mind that.

  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 1TB SSD
  • Display: 15.6” Full HD 144Hz

ASUS’s TUF lineup is meant to sacrifice a bit of flashy design language, but get you good hardware at a reasonable price. The A15 is a 15.6” model that’s pretty good for 1080p gaming and a bit of customization.

Inside is an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, a six-core CPU that has zero problems running the latest games. It’s paired with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU, which is a decent midrange contender.

While our pick does come with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, you can actually configure it up to an impressive 64GB of RAM and have both a 1TB SSD and a 1TB hard drive. It might not win any benchmark competitions, but the TUF A15 is a great gaming laptop.

  • GPU: AMD RX 5500M
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Display: 15.6” Full HD 144Hz

MSI consistently has some of the best gaming laptops out there, and the Bravo is a great budget pick for the list of best Ryzen gaming laptops. It comes with an eight-core CPU and a decent midrange graphics card that shouldn’t have any issue running competitive titles.

Alongside the Ryzen 7 4800H CPU and the RX 5500M graphics card, you also get 16GB of RAM, as well as a very fast 512GB NVMe SSD. You can upgrade the RAM yourself up to 64GB, which is pretty good. There’s also MSI’s subtle design language and a red-backlit keyboard, and this laptop does look really good.

The display is a Full HD panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, and it also has some really nice colors, making this an overall great choice.

  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
  • RAM: 32GB
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Display: 15.6” Full HD 144Hz

HP doesn’t really focus too much on gaming laptops, but the Omen 15 is a bit of a beast. It gets you terrific value and has one of the best spec lists at this price point.

To begin with, you’ve got an eight-core processor, the Ryzen 7 4800H, as well as an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, which is a great mid-range model. This combo is capable of running most modern titles at 1080p with ease, and you’ll enjoy them on a 144Hz display.

What’s great is that you get an impressive 32GB of RAM, more than anything else at this price point, and a 512GB SSD. Paired with an RGB keyboard and overall excellent build quality, this is a great choice.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q 6GB GDDR6 with ROG Boost (Base: 982MHz, Boost: 1198MHz, TDP: 60W)
  • AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS processor (8M Cache, up to 4.3GHz)
  • 15.6” 240Hz 3ms PANTONE Validated IPS-Type Full HD (1920x1080) display
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 1TB SSD
  • Display: 15.6” Full HD 240Hz

This is the Zephyrus G14’s bigger brother, and it does come with a bit of an upgrade, albeit at a higher price. The build quality is just as good, and this is really a good-looking laptop.

The spec sheet is almost identical to the Zephyrus G14 we spoke about – eight-core Ryzen 9 4900HS, 6GB Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q graphics card, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. But there’s one big difference, and that’s the display – now you get a 240Hz refresh rate. While some might say the difference is barely noticeable, we’d beg to differ. It’s quite obvious.

Overall, this might be a pricier pick than any of the others on our list. But if it fits your budget and you want great performance, it’s definitely among the best Ryzen laptops.

Acer Nitro 5

  • 15.6" Full HD display, AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics, Windows 10 operating system
  • 16GB system memory for advanced multitasking, 512GB solid state drive (SSD)
  • Headphone Jack, 3 x USB 3.0 Type A Ports, 1 x HDMI Output
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4600H
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Display: 15.6” Full HD

This is the most wallet-friendly laptop on our list, and it does make a few compromises to stick to a price that’s a few hundred dollars lower than the next one in terms of pricing.

First of all, the six-core Ryzen 5 4600H and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 are decent for competitive titles at 1080p, but they might struggle a bit with more demanding titles. You do, however, get 16GB of RAM for multitasking, as well as a 512GB SSD (adding a hard drive is rather easy).

However, the display has “only” 60Hz in terms of refresh rate, and the build quality of the Nitro 5 screams “cheap”. These are two things that are to be expected at this price point, which is why we still added it to our list of best Ryzen gaming laptops.
